Overcoming Stage Fright Isn’t Magic

Jon Barr, ACS, ALB, was a magician who needed to make his stage fright disappear. A few years after finding Toastmasters, the focus is on what is appearing — confidence, leadership and opportunity. Barr, an assistant professor of digital film making at Eastern New Mexico University, has been in Toastmasters for more than two years. While he joined the organization to help him as a magician, the skills and materials have helped the Temple graduate develop leaders at ENMU while playing a significant role in receiving tenure one year ahead of the normal schedule. The university’s student senate received...

Becoming More Polished Benefits Herself and Her Community

Speaking never came as a challenge to Kim Davis, ACG, ALB. Speaking like a professional was another thing. Davis is community relations director for Mosaic in Lubbock, an unabashed fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Tech Red Raiders and a secret fan of Barry Manilow. The Midlothian, Texas, native and Texas Tech grad last saw Manilow perform in 1981, and another concert is on her bucket list. She’s also Division F Director for Toastmasters District 23. In her role, Davis will oversee the various area directors in the Lubbock, Midland, and Odessa regions, along with eastern New Mexico....

I Came for the Speechcraft, I Stayed for the Camaraderie

Shalom Agalaba, ACB, ALB, considers his best qualities to be his drive, charisma, passion, and most importantly, his approachability. He considers his most important quality to be that he’s approachable. That’s much of the reason Agalaba is active in Toastmasters. He will spend this year as Division E Director, where he will serve Amarillo-area clubs. Agalaba was born in Dumas, Texas, and has lived most of his life in Amarillo outside of a stint in Atlanta. The Palo Duro High and Amarillo College alumnus works at AIG as a relationship manager — somebody who bridges gaps between internal departments...

Doesn’t Let His Jacket Speak for Him

You’ll recognize Darrell Henderson, DTM, by the loud suit jackets that have become his trademark at Toastmasters District 23 events. You’ll know Henderson, a Los Angeles native and El Paso veterans benefits advisor, by his humor and his passion for both Toastmasters and veterans. A member of EPCC Toastmasters and 24-year military veteran, Henderson brings his humor and passion to the top of Division D this year, where he will serve as Division D Director for the El Paso and Las Cruces areas. In his spare time, Darrell enjoys board games — not American standards like “Monopoly” or “Operation,”...

Lesson from My Son

As a manager at Sandia National Laboratories, David Gardner CC can tell you the details matter, whether it’s lab work, crafting a speech or baking cornbread. “It has to be fresh, and that’s hard in a contest, said Gardner, whose batch boasts a New Mexico State Fair blue ribbon. “Eating it right after it’s cooked it the most important thing. I put a little more sugar in my recipe than a lot of people. That helps.” Gardner, a member of Valencia Voices Toastmasters of Los Lunas, was the Area 33 Director last year and is spending this year as...
