Lesson from My Son

As a manager at Sandia National Laboratories, David Gardner CC can tell you the details matter, whether it’s lab work, crafting a speech or baking cornbread. “It has to be fresh, and that’s hard in a contest, said Gardner, whose batch boasts a New Mexico State Fair blue ribbon. “Eating it right after it’s cooked it the most important thing. I put a little more sugar in my recipe than a lot of people. That helps.” Gardner, a member of Valencia Voices Toastmasters of Los Lunas, was the Area 33 Director last year and is spending this year as...

Receiving Applause Whether on Stage or in the Board Room

Marianne Bjelke, CC, ALB, couldn’t have found a better Toastmasters club. Bjelke, a member of Albuquerque’s Off-the-Cuff, is exactly that — always ready with some joke or anecdote off the cuff to keep a conversation going. The Staten Island native, a former standup comic, serves as District 23’s Division B Director. She is the Operations Director of Hospital Services Corporation and oversees both HSC’s Customer Service Desk and HealthXnet.com. Bjelke describes herself as tall, mischievous and fiercely loyal. She is adopted and maintains a relationship with her biological and adoptive families. How did you find out about Toastmasters, and...

I Just Joined to Say I Love You

Cliff Colvin, DTM, joined Toastmasters for the reason most guys do anything. He was trying to impress a girl. Now, he’s married to that girl, and he’s still in Toastmasters impressing everyone else who knows him. Colvin, a Lubbock resident, grew up in nearby Post Texas. He is a software development manager for Tyler Technologies in Lubbock. He leads a team of 10 software developers to serve over 850 municipal courts nationwide. These Boots are Made for Talkin’

Danni Andrew, ACG, ALB, doesn’t do heels. Whatever the Farmington native does as District 23’s Program Quality Director, expect her to do it in boots. There was a time Andrew didn’t do public speaking, or leadership. But Toastmasters changed that. She is now a published author and artist and, come October, will also be a professional speaker. As the district Program Quality Director, Andrew is in charge of officer trainings, speech competitions, and district conferences. She will also work with the Club Growth Director (Cliff Colvin) on membership retention. She is a member of AS We Speak and the DTM...

Entering the Ring of Fire

In New Mexico, the land of the red and green, Jenny Zappone can always find a place she belongs or just the right words to say. But in her mind, there’s always the yellow and black of home and the deep, patient voice of Johnny Cash. Zappone, a Las Cruces resident, serves District 23 this year as its District Director. It’s a position the Latrobe, Pennsylvania, native views as CEO of the district, which includes clubs in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. “My responsibility is to oversee the operation of the district, including finances, membership growth, membership retention, any...
