Weekly Word – DressCode

What to wear, what to wear? Conferences have several functionswith options for different styles of dress. In District 23, you will see a wide variation of attire at conferences. A jacket or a sweater or a shawl can help with the hotel temperature swings.

For educational sessions and business meetings people generally wear business casual to suits. Occasionally you’ll see jeans (it is the southwest!)

Friday evening you will see business casual or suits, again with the occasional pair of jeans. People often wear what they wore during the day.

For Saturday evening, the attire gets a little dressier with
sightings of tuxedos and longs dresses (not on the same person, though!). Members who achieved the Distinguished Toastmaster level usually wear their DTM medals, ties, and/or scarves.

And some people wear business suits throughout the conference. What is most important? Wear something that is comfortable! Regardless of what you wear, we want to see you at the next conference!

Thank you for improving communication & leadership in our District!

Weekly Word – ID (International Director)

At the Spring conference, hear David McCallister, our Region 3 ID (International Director)!

What is an International Director? Let’s start with you, the member. You belong to a club that, with up to five other clubs, belongs to an Area supported by an Area Governor.  Three to four Areas belong to a Division, supported by a Division Governor.

Six Divisions span the Oklahoma Panhandle, down through West Texas around to El Paso, then up through the entire state of New Mexico. These Divisions comprise District 23, which is supported by the District Governor, Lt Governor of Education  and Training, Lt Governor Marketing, Public Relations Officer, Secretary, Treasurer, and the Immediate Past District Governor.

District 23 along with eight other Districts make up Region III. David McCallister was elected to represent Region III on the Toastmasters International Board of Directors, which is why he is called our International Director. Weekly Word – Contests

What Kind of Contests Can District 23 Conduct?
Each year, Districts must conduct an International Speech Contest and may conduct up to three additional contests*: Evaluation, Humorous, Table Topics, or Tall Tales). Each Spring District 23 conducts an International Speech Contest; fall is the Humorous Contest. The remaining three contests rotate as the 2nd contest at each conference.

What is the Progression from One Round to Another?
Members start at the club level, then compete at the Area level. Area winner(s) advance to the Division contest. (Clubs in Areas with up to four clubs may send two representatives to the Area Contest; if an Area has five or more clubs – according to Toastmasters International – each club can send one representative. Members can only compete in one speech contest). Division winners advance to the District contest. The only winner that advances past the District level is the winner of the District International Speech contact. This winner competes in the semi-finals at the International conference; winners of the semi-finals compete in the World Championship of Public Speaking.

Want More Information?
Go to the Toastmaster’s International Contest rulebook (click here) or to Frequently Asked Question (click here).

* Members in Provisional Districts and undistricted clubs can compete in a taped speech contest.
