Flossie Brown

Florenceruth “Flossie” Brown was in Toastmasters before all members were called Toastmasters. Flossie, as a college student would frequently attend her mother’s all women’s club known as the Albuquerque Toastmistress Club before she decided to join. Toastmistress clubs existed as clubs for women before they were allowed to join Toastmasters in the 1970s. Flossie comes from a family of trailblazers and has passed that spirit onto her children. Flossie’s late mother Ruth Bush Jones worked for the Forest Services in PR where she was instrumental in creating the national Smokey the Bear campaign. At the age of 21, her Toastmistress club pushed Flossie to run for Albuquerque City Commission to get the public accustomed to the idea of women candidates. She lost the campaign but that did not deter Flossie. Flossie went onto Law School at UNM (1953) with a career that progressed to General Counsel in 1978 and was the first recipient (1996) of the State Bar’s Public Lawyer Award for Distinguished Service. Flossie is a retired Assistant Attorney General and a long time resident and member of Capitol Toastmasters in Santa Fe. Her son John and step-daughter Gillian were also part of Capitol Toastmasters serving in Club leadership roles just like Flossie. From Toastmistress to Toastmasters, thanks Flossie for being that Trailblazer and sharing how Toastmasters impacted and helped you along your journey!
